Product Review: BlackoutEZ Window Covers

As a sleep consultant, I’ve made it one of my life’s missions to find the perfect blackout blind and let me tell YOU, we’re on to something here. For the last 5 years I’ve been trying and testing various methods to darken a room. From Walmart blackout curtains, to tin foil, to black garbage bags, to traditional blackout blinds, to Sleepout curtains (read more about that here), and now BlackoutEZ window covers. I have a LOT to say about room-darkening solutions, the most important being - your child needs darkness to optimize their sleep. So darkening their room in some way is super super important.

BlackoutEZ Window Covers are a specific type of blackout solution that is neither a blind, or a curtain. I have found that there are always light leaks with blinds and curtains, so this company made a product that has worked around this. How it works is: you go onto their website and they’ll ask you the measurements for your windows. You’ll input the sizes and either order a custom size or a standard size. You then choose the colour, add to cart, and then either continue shopping or checkout.

How they actually work is it’s a window covering (I’m not even sure how to describe the texture…) that is attached to your window frame with velcro. The velcro firmly attaches to the entire height and width of your window cover - edges only. You then attach the opposite side of the velcro to your window frame where you’ll be putting the cover up. Once everything is attached properly, you’ll attach the window covering to the window frame using the velcro (I like to go top right to top left, then work my way down to bottom left, finishing off with bottom right) ensuring that all the edges are pressed tight so there are no light leaks.

But, you’re not here to read about installation, let’s get to the pros and the cons of the BlackoutEZ Window Covers:

BlackoutEZ Pros:

  1. Very Quick Installation. When comparing the prices between custom window sizes and standard window sizes, I found that the custom was well worth it, so I found installation really fast. All you had to do was measure out the velcro strips, cut them, then peel back the plastic over the sticky back, and attach to the cover. You then did the same thing, but to your window, and voila! You’re done. The whole process took me about 20 minutes to fully install 2 large custom BlackoutEZ window covers in my bedroom.

  2. Easy to Remove for Access to Daylight. I love having the option of taking the window cover down to let in some natural light, and these blackout covers are so easy to take down and set up since they are stuck with long strips of velcro. Very smart design to have velcro along every border of the cover.

  3. 100% Blackout. The window covers itself are 100% blackout. The only way you could get light leaks is through the edges of your window cover. But if measured and installed correctly, these do not leak light…at all. My kid’s rooms are cave-like with these window covers.

  4. Price for Quality. The price of the BlackoutEZ window covers is in USD, but it’s very reasonable for the quality of product that you’re getting. The window covers are high quality, the velcro strips are measured for you and adhere to the cover very well. Compared to other blackout solutions, you’re getting the best bang for your buck with these.

  5. Colour Options. They have a few colour options available. I prefer the white/white or the black/white, but there are also some cuter colour options available to adhere to nurseries and children’s rooms. You could also add a nice sheer curtain overtop of the window covering if you didn’t want to see it, but I don’t find the cover ugly to look at.

  6. Custom Sizing. Some windows are weird shapes, and BlackoutEZ has made it easy for you to customize the window sizing on their website. One of the perks of ordering a custom size, is that no alterations need to be made to the window cover when it comes in and it’s actually not that much more costly to order a custom size versus a standard size.

  7. Questions are Quickly Answered. I had a question about shipping that I needed answered and the owner of BlackoutEZ was very prompt and kind in his response. I know that if I had issues with the covers that needed to be addressed, my questions would not go unanswered.

BlackoutEZ Cons:

  1. Ordering Can Be Confusing. The BlackoutEZ website seems very old and slightly hard to navigate because of this. I know this can be a roadblock for some individuals and can lead others away from even wanting to order product, but it is worth the hassle! I recommend ordering from a desktop if available - the larger screen helps with the confusion.

  2. Shipping Costs. I’m located here in Northern AB, Canada, and shipping for my order was about $50 USD… if this were a clothing order, I would immediately abort the mission. However, the curtains are shipped in a tube, and they are secured very well in there so that there are no creases in the curtains from packaging. With the conversion to CAD including the product price and the shipping, I still thought there was value in purchasing.

  3. Shipping Time. Again, I’m here in Canada and it took close to 4 weeks to receive my order. I was expecting longer shipping since I ordered custom sizes, but 4 weeks felt really long. I was thankful to have ordered them in early spring - so my rooms will be pitch black all summer long.

  4. Human Error (my own fault). I’m labelling this as a con because it’s an easy mistake, but when measuring my bedroom windows for our window covers, I didn’t account for the handle to open the window. I should have added an inch or 2 onto my measurement because it felt like the window cover was a little tight when installing - thus leading to the slightest light leak on the bottom of the window. Honestly, not a huge deal for us since we already had curtains for the window, but if I were to go back to when I was ordering, I for sure would have added slightly extra onto my custom sizes.

All in all, these window covers have fantastic value. We now have them in all 4 of our upstairs bedrooms and I will continue to recommend them to anyone who asks for a fool-proof solution. For complete transparency, I was not paid or given free product for this review - I simply love the product and want as many people to support this business as possible. They’re changing lives!

I do however have an affiliate link with them, so if you want to purchase, you can use this link here, and at no added cost to you, it’ll support me and continue to allow me to do these types of reviews.
