Supplementing With Magnesium To Improve My Sleep
Sleep is never something I ever struggled with until I became a mom. I shouldn’t even say I struggle with it now, but I have a more complicated relationship with sleep now that I’m a mom than I ever did before. Part of the reason why is because after my 3 kids go to bed between 7-8pm, I feel like it’s my responsibility to have a few designated hours of “alone-time” after a kid-filled day. I know that I stay up later than I should, but it’s because I love having alone time. I also love to wake up to a clean home, so I often spend the first couple of hours tidying our house before finally sitting down, and once I sit down, I want to be there for another couple hours…it’s a vicious cycle.
This past year, I started really prioritizing myself in a way that I hadn’t ever done before. I took 2, 6 week pottery classes and then joined a pottery guild, I joined a women’s ball hockey team, played on a summer co-ed ball hockey team, I started golfing and recording my score, and most recently, I started playing women’s ice-hockey. I grew up figure skating, so all of these hobbies are brand new to me. Putting myself out there has been so scary, but so rewarding too.
With all of those things in mind, aside from golf, my hobbies are generally occurring at nighttime. After ball hockey and ice hockey, my body is so physically tired, but I always have the worst sleep. My adrenaline after playing a game is at such a high, that settling into sleep becomes challenging. I have also found that my legs get so irritated and jittery, that it feels almost impossible to relax in bed without moving. I rarely have a problem falling asleep except for on game days, so I didn’t want to take a melatonin supplement, but I felt desperate to find something to help my muscle cramps.
Nutridom is a supplement company in Canada that has been in the industry for 20+ years. They have many different vitamins and supplements to help keep you healthy and functioning at your best. Magnesium is a micronutrient that plays a huge role in your bodily functions. It can help with your digestion, it can help with your workouts, it’s good for your heart health, your sleep, muscle cramps, and so much more.
At the beginning of September, I started taking a Magnesium Electrolyte Supplement from Nutridom after I played sports to not only help my body fall asleep, but also to help with the jittery legs and to replenish my electrolytes from sweating and working so hard. I have noticed such a HUGE difference in my ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. Magnesium isn’t like melatonin - it doesn’t actually help you fall asleep. What it actually does, is it plays a role in regulating GABA which helps you calm down and relax into sleep as it stimulates your natural production of serotonin and melatonin.
I actually forgot to take it after my ice-hockey game last night and I was restless until 4am. Finally at 4am, I got out of bed, went downstairs, drank a glass of water and took a magnesium pill and fell asleep until 7:30am. The muscle cramps in my calves were intense and my bed felt so uncomfortable. I knew my body wanted to sleep, but it wasn’t happening.
As I get older, I realize that prioritizing my sleep is such a necessity. It’s common for adults to need between 7-9 hours of consolidated sleep every night. When I don’t get a good sleep, I notice an increase in my appetite the next day, I am more irritable, and frustrated easily.
On days where I don’t play sports, I now take an oral magnesium supplement 30 mins before bed, and on game days, I use the magnesium/electrolyte powder and mix it into water 30 mins before bed. I’ve noticed a major difference in my personal sleep and I think you’ll notice some great benefits yourself.
I do want to link the exact magnesium & electrolyte powder that I’ve been using here: Magnesium Powder
I also reached out to Nutridom and got a discount code for you to use to get free shipping (expedited too!). Use can use discount code: BAILEY to save on your purchase.
If you take magnesium before bed - let me know in the comments how it’s helped you!
