When to Transition from a Bassinet to a Bigger Sleep Space?
What you want to know, is that with every baby item, there is always a manufacturers guide. Companies that manufacture baby items have to go through rigorous testing to ensure that their item is safe for your baby.
Your bassinet will have a manufacturers guide that will have height and weight restrictions.
If you have a big baby that is gaining weight quick, then the chances of your baby transitioning out of the bassinet sooner is high. You will also want to make sure that your baby isn’t getting too long for the bassinet. If your baby has met both of those milestones, then it’s time to transition.
If your baby is NOT too tall or too heavy for the bassinet, but they are now starting to show signs of rolling, then it’s time to transition them to a bigger sleep space. Rolling can be unsafe in a bassinet, so you need to get them out of their swaddle and into a bigger sleep space.
Babies are little wiggle worms in their sleep, so giving them a large sleep environment (crib or pack n play) is great. Even if they are actively moving in their sleep, they are still sleeping.
If you didn’t even use a bassinet at all and you jumped right into using a pack n play or a crib, that’s also okay too! Bassinets are more of a personal preference, because babies usually spend the first 6-12 months in your room anyway.
I do always recommend that your baby sleeps in their OWN sleep space. A bassinet, a crib, or a pack n play are the best 3 options. Unfortunately, co-sleeping is not rated for safe sleep, and the risk of SIDS is exponentially higher. We definitely don’t want your baby in your bed with you, so it’s way more ideal to have them in a bassinet next to you.
Always make sure to check the manufacturers guidelines on your specific baby product to ensure that they are as safe as possible while snoozing.
