4 Tips for Moving Your Baby Into Their Nursery

Moving your baby into their nursery can be so bittersweet. What makes it easier is knowing that you’re setting their nursery up well, into an environment that is conducive for sleep.

Deciding to move your baby out of your room and into their own room is a personal decision, and not one that should be influenced by outside perspectives. Remember, you are the only one waking with your baby in the night - you are the decision maker! If we’re relying strictly on AAP sleep guidelines, they recommend keeping your baby in your room for the first year. However, that’s not always feasible, and not every parent wants to have lights out by 7pm in their own room. So just remember, even if the AAP recommends that you keep your baby in your room until age 1, it’s not a law. You still get to choose when to move your baby over!

Here are 4 tips to help make that transition from your room into your child’s nursery:

  1. Video Monitor Set Up.
Having a great video monitor set up in your baby’s nursery can help alleviate some anxiety about them sleeping in another room. My favourite baby monitors have clear night-vision, a good range so you can watch the monitor throughout the house, and I also prefer non-wifi monitors. I have heard scary stories of wifi-monitors being hacked, so I steer clear of those ones in our home. I have tried quite a few over the years and have landed on the Hello Baby monitor from amazon. Here is a link for it here (affiliate link).

  2. Room is Ideal Sleep Environment.
Of course we want to make sure that your baby’s nursery is set up as an ideal place for them to sleep during the day as well as during the night. Darkness helps the production of melatonin and it also really helps with eliminating early morning wake ups and short naps. Using a noise machine also helps your baby get accustomed to sleeping with sound, so that sounds outside of their room don’t wake them up. It’s also ideal if your child’s room temperature is between 18-21 degrees Celsius. Our body temperature lowers when we sleep and we actually sleep better in a cool environment.
My favourite noise machine is the
    Hatch.
    My favourite blackout covers are
    BlackoutEZ.

  3. Sleep Space is Clear of Any Additives
It’s not safe for child who is under 1 to have anything else in the crib with them apart from a fitted crib sheet. I know that braided crib bumpers are so cute, and that crib mobiles add to the aesthetic of the room, but it’s seriously a hazard to keep those things in the crib with your baby. Remove everything except for the fitted crib sheet.
If you do need a mattress option for your crib, I really love the
Newton Mattress. It’s the Lamborghini of crib mattresses. So easy to clean if it gets soiled, but also totally breathable if your baby decides to sleep face-down (like so many do!!).

  4. Have a Plan.
Like any big changes in life, it’s always better to have a plan. Whether you’re starting up at the gym, or you’re taking the plunge and sleep training your baby, having a plan can help ensure your success. Choose a night to move your baby into their nursery and do it!

Of course, if you need help making this transition and want a sleep professional in your corner cheering you on - please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m always accepting new clients for individualized support.
