Product Review: Kiwi Sleep Crib Mattress; My Honest Review as a Sleep Consultant

I love seeing the evolution of baby products and items as I get older. I’ve only been a parent for just over 6 years, and things have significantly changed in that short period of time. One thing I didn’t think much about when my oldest was a newborn, was how important his crib mattress was. That should have been on the top of my list of important baby items.

When Drake was 2 months old, our doctor pointed out a flat spot on the side of his head from him sleeping with his head tilted to the right side. His advice was to flip him to sleep the other way and see if he’ll start turning his head to the left. Thankfully that helped. I know that there are many other babies who have to go through extensive therapies and even helmet therapy to correct flat spots on their heads, so I’m grateful ours was minor.

Choosing the proper crib mattress can play such a big role in your baby’s overall health and comfort. If you think about it, your baby spends over half of their day in bed - they may as well have a top-notch mattress!

Kiwi Sleep was a baby brand that had been on my radar for great crib mattresses - up there with the Newton Baby Mattress. However, Kiwi Sleep is different in that they specialize in all things sleep. They don’t just make baby products, they also make adult sized mattresses and pillows.

After having set up the Kiwi Sleep crib mattress for 2 weeks, I want to share some things I love about it!

  • The mattress is double sided - featuring an infant side and a toddler side. I know this isn’t a new invention, but I love the versatility and it’s so easy to tell which side is which since they have it embroidered onto the washable mattress cover. Because of the double sided mattress, you get prolonged usage out of it. You can technically use this mattress for up to 5 years with just one child as you transition them from crib to toddler bed. Let alone passing it onto any other children you have - you’re definitely getting your money’s worth out of this crib mattress.

  • It is quite breathable - Kiwi Sleep has invented this technology that features air channels in the crib mattress for breathability and air flow. It also keeps the mattress cool so that your baby isn’t overheating. I snuck into my daughter’s room at night to feel her on the mattress while she was asleep to see how warm she was. As I gently rolled her onto her side, her back was warm, but not sweaty at all. The portion of the mattress where she was laying wasn’t sunken in or wet from sweat at all.

  • Washable Zipper Cover - this is a must-have feature for any parent. Accidents happen, and it’s necessary to be able to properly wash your baby’s crib mattress. The Kiwi Sleep crib mattress has a zipper cover that protects the actual mattress, and this is removable and washable. Granted, I would put a separate mattress protector and crib sheet on the mattress anyway, it’s still a nice feature for when accidents happen.

  • Waterproof COVER - this is my absolute favourite feature of this crib mattress! The zipper cover that comes on the mattress is waterproof on the toddler side and water-resistant on the infant side. This is genius since toddlers generally make bigger messes and they often have access to a water bottle in their bed that can leak.

  • Tested for Safety - this is an absolute must when using a new baby product with your children. I always check reviews and safety testing to make sure that I can trust the products that I’m using. The Kiwi Sleep crib mattresses have been rigorously tested and approved by the FDA and is actually manufactured in the USA. Here is a link to read more about their safety protocols.

  • Shipping was fast - considering the mattress came from the US, shipping was surprisingly quick. It only took 1.5 weeks to come up here to Northern Alberta. The mattress comes rolled up in a box. It’s vacuum-sealed and packed so tightly. Once you open the package, they recommend letting the mattress take shape for 1 hour before letting anyone go on it.
Years ago my husband and I got a foam mattress in a box, and I think they had us wait 24 hours before laying on it, so 1 hour seemed really reasonable.

There are so many pros for this baby mattress that I hardly have any cons.

  • Price Point - the Kiwi Sleep crib mattress is expensive. It would be considered a big-ticket item in the grand scheme of things. However, that could easily be argued since your baby is spending such a significant amount of time on their crib mattress, that price shouldn’t matter too much. They do have some payment plan options for their adult mattresses, but I couldn’t see any for their infant mattresses. If using AfterPay (or an equivalent) would make the purchase feasible for you, I would email their customer service - they are super responsive.

  • Shipping Outside of the US: While shipping is fast, it is expensive to ship to Canada. Shipping within the USA is free which is incredible, but unfortunately it’s over $100 to ship to Canada. All in, you’re looking at spending about $500 CAD for the crib mattress and shipping combined.

When you weigh the pros and cons of the Kiwi Sleep Crib Mattress, I think the pros far outweigh the cons. Having that sense of security knowing that your baby is asleep in a safe place is unmatched. Money is a sensitive subject for many, but this is a baby item that I would definitely save up for and splurge on.
